Over 1.6 million service men and women have been deployed in Iraq or Afghanistan since 2001. Over 100,000 OIF/OEF veterans have been diagnosed by the VA with PTSD or other mental health need. Over 700,000 children have had a parent or parents deployed during their formative years. Most Americans are untouched by the wars, never experiencing a second or third deployment another year in constant 360 degree danger, witnessing the horrors of war, never becoming a caregiver to a young soldier wounded in war, never living through the anxiety of separation and reentry.

Swords to Plowshares and our colleagues are doing what we can to ensure that no veteran falls through the cracks but there is much to be done. Learn more about the issues facing our veterans and their families and check back on our policy pages to see ways in which you can help. You don’t have to move mountains. A letter to your editor or lawmaker, a small donation, and taking the time to learn what is going on in the lives of our service members makes a big difference.
