On January 27th, 2025, an announcement impacting federal funding was issued by the U.S. Office of Management and Budget. As an agency that depends on a significant amount of government funding, we are tracking updates made by the federal government closely. We want to let our community of veterans and supporters know that at this time, Swords to Plowshares does not anticipate any significant impact to our programs that support nearly 3,000 local veterans each year.
Here is an overview of what has happened to date:
Evening of January 27th: The White House issued an executive order to freeze all government funding pending further review of programs. Read the memo here.
January 28th: A federal judge issued a temporary stop on the executive order. Additionally, the VA, which is our closest partner and largest funder, issued a statement that all 44 VA programs were safe from federal freezing. Read here.
January 29th: The White House called off the government funding freeze. Read here.
Now: We remain confident that VA funding for veteran programs will continue without interruption, including HUD-VASH subsidies for nearly 350 of our veteran residents, rental assistance for nearly 500 veterans through Supportive Services for Veteran Families, stabilization housing under the Healthcare for Homeless Veterans program, suicide prevention services through SSG Fox, and veteran benefits advocacy to 120 veterans via the Legal Services for Veterans grant. Swords to Plowshares will remain in close contact with elected officials at the local, state and federal levels to stay apprised of updates.
Although we currently face no direct impact from the federal announcement, freezes or cuts to programs relating to healthcare, housing, and government assistance, among others, could have a trickle-down effect on veterans and veteran care.
Struggle and times of uncertainty are nothing new. Our 50-year history of serving veterans has primed us to be strong in our commitment to ending homelessness and poverty among veterans. Now, we invite you to roll up your sleeves with us. You can ensure veterans have access to the life-affirming programs and resources they have earned by contributing to our mission today.
