Swords to Plowshares is proud to provide free legal services to veterans seeking access to Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) benefits and assistance with military discharge upgrade applications through the Department of Defense.

ABOUT OUR PROGRAM

Connecting with the veteran community

Each year our attorneys help hundreds of veterans, but thousands more need legal assistance. The processes to obtain veterans benefits and correct military records can be complex and confusing to those without legal training. That is why in 2009, we launched the Pro Bono Program to increase our capacity to reach more low-income and homeless veterans.

Since 2013, lawyers from Orrick’s Bay Area offices have been involved with Swords to Plowshares' Veterans Pro Bono Program. They have managed numerous full-scope cases seeking VA benefits and discharge upgrades, regularly staffed Legal Drop-in Clinics, and provided leadership for our Pro Bono Advisory Board.

Our Pro Bono Program offers both limited and full scope volunteer opportunities primarily through Legal Clinics, representation in military discharge upgrade applications, and records review. Our Pro Bono Coordinator is available to schedule clinic participation, give trainings, and provide ongoing case mentorship.
